Senior Transportation Safety: What Families Should Know

For many seniors, staying in a familiar vehicle — with their own mirrors, seat position, and belongings — makes a ride more comfortable and safer. A patient, background-checked driver behind the wheel of that same car removes the stress of switching to someone else's car entirely.

Ask what vetting a driver goes through before trusting them with a family member. At minimum, look for a background check, a clean motor vehicle record (MVR) review, drug screening, and an in-person interview — not just an app-based sign-up with no human review.

Familiarity reduces anxiety. A senior who rides in their own car, with the seat already adjusted correctly and no unfamiliar smells or surfaces, tends to feel calmer than one stepping into a stranger's vehicle. If mobility aids, a cane, or medical equipment are normally kept in the car, they're already there.

Confirm the service can handle appointment-based scheduling, not just on-demand pickup. Medical appointments often need a driver who will wait during the visit and drive the return trip too, rather than a one-way drop-off.

Loop in a trusted contact. For recurring trips — dialysis, physical therapy, routine checkups — it helps to have a family member or caregiver on record who can be reached if plans change.

Don't overlook the return trip. Many safety conversations focus only on getting somewhere; just as much planning should go into getting home, especially after a procedure or appointment that leaves someone tired or groggy.
